Kate Middleton gave birth to a baby boy at 11.01am, Kensington Palace announced at 1pm, after going into labour early this morning.
The arrival, which was reportedly due today – on St George’s Day – has immediately had big implications for Wills’ brother.
The baby has now automatically become fifth-in-line to the throne – a position Harry had occupied, meaning he has been kicked down the line of succession.
And despite Kate and Wills’ baby being a boy, he is not leapfrogging his older sister Charlotte in line to the throne, as would have been the case before changes to succession laws before the birth of Prince George.
Also, now the baby is born Prince Andrew – who was born second in line – has moved to seventh and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie to eighth and ninth.
The next in line to the throne is Prince Charles, who is likely to install Camilla as his Queen Consort when he becomes King.
Second is Prince William, then third and fourth is his son and daughter Prince George and Princess Charlotte respectively.
Kensington Palace announced Kate went into labour early this morning, tweeting: “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London earlier this morning in the early stages of labour.
The Duchess travelled by car from Kensington Palace to the Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital with The Duke of Cambridge.”
Despite dropping down the line to the throne, Harry will have more reasons to be happy – as well as becoming an uncle again.
He was recently appointed Commonwealth Youth Ambassador by his grandma the Queen.
And just next month he will finally tie the knot with Meghan Markle in a fairytale Royal Wedding at Windsor Castle on May 19.
